To Splurge or to Purge?

To Splurge or to Purge?

To splurge or to purge on your wedding? A bride faces quite the rollercoaster of emotions when newly engaged. The excitement of knowing that they’ll be spending the rest of their life with their one true love, the desire to scream from the rooftops that you’re getting married, the urge to run to Pinterest and open up that board full of wedding inspiration—many brides know the feeling.

But as with all rollercoasters, all highs inevitably come to an end.

Soon the stresses and woes of planning a wedding—getting a venue, inviting people, acquiring the right music—slowly, but surely, begin to creep up. One of the biggest sources of a bride’s woes is almost as classic as a tale as old as time—money.

It’s no secret that getting married costs quite a pretty penny. The bridal industry alone procured over $60 million in 2024, with each wedding costing an average of $30,000. A bride’s dress alone could cost up to $3,000

When confronted with the financial costs of having an event to celebrate such an important part of their life, a bride must ask herself…”do I go big, or go home? Or maybe somewhere in the middle?”

Here are a few important points to consider when answering that pertinent question:

  1. What do you desire more than anything at your wedding?

Many things run around a bride’s mind when it comes to determining what will and will not be in her wedding—from florals and the most beautiful decoration one could imagine, to a venue one could only conjure up in their dreams.

But when confronted with the reality of the fact that a dream wedding would cost a pretty penny, it is important to ask oneself “what do I want more than anything during this special day?” That way, when a situation arises where you are made to cut down on things, you are able to make the compromise between your budget and making sure that the most important parts of your wedding stay and make the day special.

  1. What are your personal preferences?

Now, when it comes to compromising between your budget and your big day, one needs to consider their personal tastes and preferences. Are you willing to hold the ceremony in a smaller venue, or have you always wanted to have a big show with colorful lights and shine? Would you want to have a small ceremony outdoors, or have a big crowd indoors?

These details and factors also need to be thought upon when making changes that could save you a buck or two.

Overall, the days spent planning for your big day are already stressful as it is, which is compounded by the reality of how expensive a wedding is. When having to choose between your budget and what you want, it’s important to ensure that you are making changes that ensure that not only are you not going into debt, but that you also get to maintain the aspects that would make this very important day special.
