Couple of the Month ~ Meghan + Brendan
Couple of the month for September is Meghan and Brendan. Read about their story here.
Brendan and I have been very close friends since sixth grade. Brendan wrote the following for our wedding website on our story:
Meghan and I met in sixth grade when we had nearly every class together. In the summer of 2007, a small group from our class took a trip to Gettysburg, PA. We quickly became friends over this trip and that soon turned into a crush – at least on my part. I spent the trip attempting to court Meghan with one thing I knew all girls love – jewelry. Well, I found the perfect piece at the Hershey Park gift shop – a mood necklace with an “M” on it. She loved it… I think.
Meghan and I stayed close friends through middle school and high school. We went on multiple family trips together, briefly dated in high school, but ultimately went our separate ways for college. Following graduation, Meghan and I both moved back to Grosse Pointe. She for law school and I to start my career at Merrill Lynch. Between both of our busy schedules we found some time to hang out and after a few nights of going out with friends, we both realized that a spark was still there. We knew after time apart, that we were meant to be together.
For my second, more official proposal, I skipped the gift shop and went to a real jewelry store. The ring traveled with me via RV with the Berkery family on a trip to Maine. As the family prepared a surprise dinner, we hiked through Grafton Notch Park. Hiking through the beautiful park, I suggested we stop and take a photo. As we put a smile on our faces for the picture, I got down on one knee and popped the question. They always say if you don’t succeed at first, try try again.
P.S. – My 11 year old intuition was right – she did love the mood necklace. I found out after we got engaged that she still has it!
What we do for a living:
Brendan is a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch. I am an attorney at Vandeveer Garzia.
The Proposal:
Brendan proposed to me on September 7, 2020. We were on a family trip to my family’s home in Maine. Brendan planned on proposing while we were hiking in Arcadia National Park, but because of the pandemic the park was closed. Instead, we went on a hike at Grafton State Park with my brother and best friend, who happens to be my maid of honor. After hiking for a couple of hours, Brendan suggested that we take a picture in front of a waterfall. I kind of blew him off because he never suggests we take photos and I wanted to get going so that we could hit a cute pie stand that we passed on the way into the State Park, but Brendan insisted. So as we were taking the picture, Brendan got down on one knee and popped the question. My brother and friend were there to take pictures. It was wonderful. On our way back to my family’s home, we were able to stop at the pie stand (ha) and when we got home my parents had decorated the house and made a nice family meal. It was a lovely engagement surrounded by some of our closest people.
