When you’re choosing a wedding ring, it’s likely you’ll be after something that looks good with your engagement ring. But did you know that you don’t have to choose the exact same metal? Providing you go with something with a similar hardness level (to stop one ‘wearing down’ the other) there is a massive range of options to choose from. Here are a few of the different metals you could go for, and the pros and cons of each.

Gold
Gold has been the choice metal for wedding bands for centuries. It’s valuable but also extremely versatile, and one of the nice things about it is the different carats and shades it comes in. There’s classic eighteen carat gold, as well as twenty two carat yellow gold sometimes referred to as ‘Indian gold’. It also comes in white gold, as well as rose gold which has been gaining popularity in recent years. When it comes to your wedding and band, you could choose a gold that complements your skin tone. For example, classic golden shades complement warmer skin tones whereas white gold wedding rings will complement cooler skin tones. Rose gold is versatile in that it will suit both. If you’re looking for something classic and timeless, gold is the way to go.

Platinum
Platinum is a precious metal; it’s has a beautiful silvery white colour which will never fade or change colour. This is a more expensive option, but if you have a bigger budget platinum makes for a very sturdy and incredibly good-looking option. Since it’s such a hard metal, be aware that this could cause damage to rings in softer metals due to friction on your finger.

Palladium
If you love the look of platinum but your budget is smaller, palladium is a fabulous alternative. It has a similar silvery white finish, is hypoallergenic and is a high-quality material without the high price tag of some of the other metals available. The downside is that palladium can be hard to find since it’s still a rare metal (it’s even more rare than gold). Although palladium rings are growing in popularity, so you might get lucky at a local jeweller.

Silver
Sterling silver is a very versatile and malleable precious metal. Despite it being one of the most common metals in jewellery, it’s often overlooked as a choice for wedding bands. However this needn’t be the case, silver is a beautiful choice. It’s especially ideal for those on a budget, but that’s not to say it looks cheap. While it’s more grey toned and doesn’t have the super shiny finish as say platinum, it’s still excellent choice for a wedding band. It looks great and it’s a strong, durable metal.

Titanium
Titanium is recognisable by its dark silver colour. While it feels light in weight, it’s an incredibly robust and durable metal. Titanium rings will last you for life, and unlike some other metals, it has a low environmental impact. On the downside, titanium wedding bands can be challenging and expensive to repair and resize due to the strength of the metal.
